Bound For Mondego Bay: British Infantry Regiment Movements To and
From the Peninsula, 1808 to 1814
The following information has been extracted from a wide variety of
occasionally inconsistent sources. It attempts to track the comings
and goings of all the infantry battalions of the British Army who served
in the Peninsula in the period 1808 to 1814: some who stayed the entire
distance, others who served several tours of duty, some who went only
to suffer high losses and be either sent home to recruit of to be absorbed
by their first battalions.
Commanding officers and brigade assignations have been shown. In all
instances the assignments were the first postings on arrival, and often
changed afterwards. The reader is directed to Oman or Reid to gain
a fuller understanding of later postings once ‘in country’.
Try as I might, I have not been able to ascertain accurate battalion
strengths on leaving France in May/June/July 1814. Hopefully in time,
these will come to light and an update will be possible.
It must be noted, dear reader, that this has been compiled from often
incomplete sources: hence the liberal use of ‘@’ for ‘approximate’ wherever
needed. Such figures were based upon best guesses of strengths by reference
to known strengths a few weeks (or perhaps months) before. Likewise,’?’ has
been used as necessary whenever unknown data remains to be completed.
* Denotes an officer holding brevet rank (** being a double brevet,
i.e. a Captain in a regiment who is also a Lieutenant-Colonel in the
Army).
Disembarkation strength summaries at the end of each section do not
includes drafts for existing battalions (or ‘replacements’,
if you prefer WW2 terminology).

Noted:
* Includes 22 drowned on voyage home
** Includes 187 drowned on voyage home
There were no accurate regimental returns taken after disembarkation – probably
due to dispersal of regiments between various ports and general confusion.
The official returns give a total landed infantry strength after
evacuation of 19,539 from Corunna, plus 3,100 from Vigo.
By deducting these total landed figures from disembarkation strength
returns, a loss of around 8,200 infantrymen occurred between August
1808 and January 1809. However a number had been left behind – perhaps
over 2,000 sick, detached or straggling – many of whom eventually
returned to the British Army, mainly in Battalions of Detachments.
It is due to this lack of accurate landed returns that losses in the
Corunna campaign have been shown instead. These amount to 6,461 men
in the Corunna campaign, to which must be added earlier losses at Rolica
(480) and Vimiero (720), although some of these were wounded who later
returned to the ranks.
The embarkation from Corunna and Vigo left 13 battalions behind as
a garrison in Portugal (1/3rd, 2/9th, 3/27th, 29th, 1/40th, 1/45th,
2/31st, 5/60th, 97th, 1st Line Battalion KGL, 2nd Line Battalion KGL,
5th Line Battalion KGL, 7th Line Battalion KGL).

Total number of battalions embarked at Corunna and Vigo in January
= 36, (22,639 men) leaving 13 battalions behind in Portugal (plus sick/stragglers).
One battalion embarked for the remainder of the year.
Total number of battalions disembarked for 1809 = 25, of which:
· 10
were 1st battalions
· 15
were 2nd battalions.
Approximate total infantry disembarked = 19,412 men.
Average battalion strength = 776 men.
After Corunna – the Dunkirk of its era – there simply
weren’t enough 1st battalions at home to reinforce the Peninsula
field army. So out came the 2nd battalions, plus other troops as could
be spared from nearby garrisons. Even so, the numbers did not equalise
the 22,000-odd embarked from Corunna and Vigo in January.
Tellingly, the only troops from the Corunna campaign fit to return
that year were the Lights – the 43rd, 52nd and 95th.

A year of consolidation: numbers arriving matched those of 1809, about
half were first battalions, and no infantry left the country.
But the battalions arriving were getting weaker, and sicker. Quite
a few of the new arrivals were Walcheren survivors.
