The French Consular Guard in 1801: the Potrelle Uniform PlatesIn the Colas Bibliography there is a listing for a series of 14 plates of the French Consular Guard, published in 1801 by Potrelle. These high quality images, apart from those by von Hoffman and Henschel, are one of the only sources for the study of the uniforms of the early days of the French guards. In 1953, the well-known French uniform painter Lucien Rousselot made a copy of the plates from copies in the National Library of Paris. There are 14 images of the Consular Guard Infantry - but it is unknown
if this was the complete study, because by 1801 the Consular Guard included
cavalry. Sincethe originals are missing, there is no way of knowing
if other elements of the Guard were included. These drawings originally appeared on line in German by our partner, Napoleon Online and are used with permission of Edmund Wagner. Please note that Markus Stein holds the copyright on all of these images.
