Re: Numbering generals


It was a practice of the time. As officers were named in reports by their last name and rank, it would become confusing as several may have the same rank and last name. The French used 'younger' or 'older' or 'father' and 'son' but they did not seem to have anywhere the numbers as the Prussians and Russians.
