Allow me to second Oliver's observation - during the American Civil War, both armies had a requirement for two opposing teeth - no specification that they be in front or on either side. However, I have found that the two front molars work best.

And I have heard anecdotes about men removing teeth to avoid military service (though if only two opposing teeth are required, such removals would seem rather drastic)
