Re: Russian numbering systems.

Steven,

Thanks for response. As you said, there are inconsistencies with numbering. Ilovaiskys case is an interesting example. There were 12 Ilovaiskys, and seven of them took part in 1812-1814 Campaigns:
Aleksey Vasilievich Ilovaisky 3rd (1767-1842)general of cavalry
Ivan Dmitrievich Ilovaisky 4th (1767-1826) major general
Nikolay Vasilievich Ilovaisky 5th (1772-1828) lieutenant general
Grigory Dmitrievich Ilovaisky 9th (1780-1847) major general
Joseph (Osip) Vasilievich Ilovaisky 10th (1776-1843) lieutenant general
Timofei Dmitrievich Ilovaisky 11th (1786-1812) colonel
Vasilii Dmitrievich Ilovaisky 12th (1785-1860) lieutenant general

Numbering is not consequtive, that could mean that those who does not served in the camapigns also were "numbered." Also, Timofei Ilovaisky is 11th, although he is younger and junior in rank than his famous relative 12th Ilovaisky.
