We talk about this months ago. I think that the interest of Napoleon was not into the war but better into the peace. It is what he really tried to do. In your argumentation you look only at the army-side. First it is not proved that the army wanted war. You go very quickly in the idea that the soldier were only interested in ‘looting’. How many soldier became rich during the war ? How do you explain the conscription to be so unpopular ? But what is clear is that the people of France did’nt want war.
Second point I strongly believe that if N. succeed to return and recieved the popular acclamation was because they were tired of the Bourbon.
Last point, It is during the peace ( Amiens) and during the Consulat that Bonaparte recieved the greatest National support. I am quiete convinced that the real hability of Napoleon was as administrator, better than as Militar.
