A very quick and dirty definition that I am sure others can improve upon -

"The great man theory of history" basically reflects the view that history is the story of kings, rulers, governments, and the 'great folk' who fill such positions.

I think the term may have in fact originated with critics of that 'old-fashioned' view of history, who argued for a broader based view and retelling of history that included the story of the common people as well as addressing other aspects of history beyond battles, wars, and dates of treaties and legislation.
