I believe it was quite common for the British to use grenadier companies in detatched roles & I assume this would include skirmishing.

By the way Capt Menzies was badly wounded at the siege of Burgos. He was supposedly a large man - well suited as a grenadier. He must have also been very tough to survive 16 sword wounds.
