Caroline's "attached" is more likely easier to understand and its meaning thus clearer than using a more technical word such as "supernumerary".

The 'how' and 'why' of having so many officers 'agregado' is difficult to explain, I think, without a greater knowledge of Beresford's reforms or was 'agregado' always a system used in the Portuguese Army?

There is certainly much we do not know, although there are some fine primer's on the army. With the sources of information becoming more difficult to access, it may well be that the complete story of the Portuguese Army 1808-1814 will never be written or published for wider distribution.
