An 'adjoint' was a captain on staff duty. 'Adjutant general' was a staff rank, equivalent to colonel, used from 1793-1800. It was then changed to 'adjutant commandant.' It also denoted that these officers were staff officers and not commanding troops. Generally speaking, they served as chiefs of staff or the head of staff sections.

If one was promoted, then he would be a general of brigade.
