Bill,

The British Military of the time reminds me of Lord Palmerston's famous response on the Schleswig-Holstein Question, which was something like:

Proclaimed it to be so complicated that only three men had ever fully understood it—one being Prince Albert, who was dead; the second, a professor, who had become insane; the third, Palmerston himself, who had forgotten it.
