There's a book out there titled "WWII James Jones" that's essentially war art that is held in the U.S.. James Jones was asked to do something to tie the whole thing together and he chose to write about the "evolution of the soldier". He postulates that a soldier does not become a true professional until he accepts the fact that he will not survive the war he is fighting. I suspect his attitude is very similar to the vetrens alluded to
