Re: French names on Australian coastline

Yes Rivoli Bay was named by Baudin in April 1802 to commemorate the battle of the same name. However the adjacent land was not settled until 1844 when it was further investigated by Captain Emanuel Underwood, by which time the name had stuck.

My great-aunt published a book on the early history of Rivoli Bay in 1974, she being a descendant of one of the original settlers in the Bay area. However she makes one mistake in that she claims that Baudin named the bay after the Duke of Rivoli - Massena, which is clearly a mistake as Massena did not become a duke until 1808, so the bay was clearly named after the battle itself.
