Thanks. I'm no statistician, however, we all know muskets were volley weapons--therefore it might be more interesting to run the numbers to say, if you had a 500 man front line, firing at a 500 man (5' x 2'each) front, at a distance of 100yds, how many hits would be registered?

I believe the Prussians did just this and came to conclusion that the only key to success was tight volley fire. Perhaps one reason why the cloud of skirmisher tactics of the early Grand Army were so successful...
