Re: Christmas in the Trenches, 1914 (OT)

Silent Night! Holy Night!

Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!

The unofficial/spontaneous Christmas Truce happened on both the Western and Eastern Fronts. Even officers and nurses joined in and had their pictures taken during the event.

Some lasted several days and even when the truce was called off the spirit remained that holiday season. On New Year's Eve, a Saxon Regiment sent word to the British that they were being inspected at midnight and had to fire their automatische pistolen, but that they would fire high and asked that the British keep under cover "lest regrettable accidents occur." At 11:00 Berlin time, spandau's went off well over the heads of the British.

[Sir John French was replaced as CinC BEF on 22 December 1915 and Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien was replaced 7 May 1915]

Happy Holidays.
