I believe that the Russians also took a stand at Borodino because if they hadn't, their army may well have fallen apart for morale reasons.
I agree Kutisov was breathtakingly incompetent but Barclay did't seem to want to fight Napoleon anywhere. This was not from some deep-seated plan of luring him to destruction but because he feared the beating he'd get.
I think the 1812 Disaster was more of a 'Near run thing' than many give it credit for.
