I`m not sure when Austria introduced pensions for officers; I know that the lack of a viable pension system was one of the factors which prompted Prussian officers prior to 1806 to hang on in service for as long as possible, because they could not afford to retire. Thus they were all so much older (rank-for-rank) than their French opponents at Jena. The British system of an officer going on to half pay for life thus had certain advantages.
