R.S. Alexander's book has the following contemporary account (Bonapartism and The Revolutionary Tradition in France, 2002. p.215)
"After a serious bout of drinking in the Quinze-Vingts quarter, [the brother Lefevre] accosted four gendarmes while shouting: 'Nous sommes malhereux à présent, mais le petit Caporal reviendra, le fédérés ne sont pas morts..'" This according to the police report in the Paris police archives.

Also the trial of John Peltier, published in London in 1803, quotes the phrase "le petit caporal" (p.241) "...que le petit caporal devait être poignardé, et le gouvernement changé..."
