The phrase of "early battles" allows two interpertations: either the battles of the Revolution and Consulate or Napoleon's battles.
Steve's reply focused the atlas for the later (the maps were for Jomini's Life of Napoleon - Vie politique et militaire de Napoléon - yet there was text primarily to provide each map sheet with an outline in order to serve as a key).
The same style goes for his multi-volume work Histoire critique et militaire des guesses de la Révolution (1792 - 1802). The atlas of maps came with a Légendes pour l'atlas des guerres de la Révolution.
