Officers' Pay in the British Guard Regiments

I am looking at the pay scales for the British Guard Regiments and they have two different rates:

A Subsistence per diem
Gross Pay and Allowance per diem as borne on the Establishment

For example for a Major in the Life Guards:

Subsistence per diem was 19 Shillings 6 pence

Gross Pay and Allowance per diem was £1 6 Shillings.

Underneath their table is a note stating:

The difference between the Subsistence and Gross pay of the Officers of these Regiments, after deducting Poundage, Hospital, and Agency, is paid as “Arrears.”

Can anyone explain what it means? Do the Guards officers get both pay?

Thanks!

Bob
