Why would a packed 20 ranks deep move better across terrain than 10 sets of 2 ranks deep with some space between each? It seems to defy some simple logic

In the former all it takes is the front man to stumble and 19+ men are falling over on top of each other, in the latter there is space for them to recover and rejoin their position without interfering with the 18 men behind them. Equally as casualties occur, in the closed form there is no possibility to see and avoid a falling/fallen body.

The only real excuse for closed column seems to be such a lack of training in Officers and Sargeants that other formations are not feasible.
