Re: Light and Heavy Cannister *LINK*
In Response To: Re: Light and Heavy Cannister ()

Just to add an experience from the Napoleonic wars on smaller or larger ball sizes in canister, from the 1816 version of Decker (before he updates his work to keep up with developments), volume 1, page 153:

My loose translation:
In recent times, the 3-löthigen has been abolished and, instead, the 2-löthigen was introduced for use at close distances against infantry; against cavalry, however, they caused little or no damage at all, because the experience has shown during the last wars that while the 2-löthigen canister would ricochet, they did not shatter any bones, at least with horses.

Has anyone seen other examples of this?

Generally, Decker is a good source ("real" experience seems to start showing up the last Scharnhorst volume, despite his service in the Revolutionary wars).

Having been away for just five days, I have not caught up with the latest exchanges (180 unread posts). - R

The quote is from - Die Artillerie für alle Waffen oder Lehrbuch der Gesammten reinen und ausübenden Feld- und belagerungs-artilleriewissenschaft: In drei Theilen by Karl von Decker; Published by Mittler, 1816.
