It is the wrong word. Artillery was used offensively, together with infantry and cavalry in countless engagements prior to - and since - 1807.
What S did was to use an independent force of guns in an advance towards the enemy.
Why was he not supported with infantry?? Sloppy coordination.
And maybe Smola did the same (I haven`t checked).
