Re: Simply Senarmont
In Response To: Simply Senarmont ()

Well, this may add to your insomnia, but I've run across quite a bit of spelling variation in 18th and 19th century names. As one example, I have an ancestor (second half of 19th century) who spelled his name Prestin, Prestine and Preston at different points in his life. And this wasn't a case of Ellis Island Anglicization. Consistency in spelling just wasn't an issue until modern times. So it is entirely possible that the confusion over the correct spelling of Senarmont might come from his inconsistency in spelling his own name.

What you need to do is to track down each and every surviving signature to determine the degree of variation in his spelling ...

Or you can do what I do, if there is no general agreement on spelling, go with the one lacking accents, it's easier to type!
