Ahh, that may be so, but in the French classes I've been through, missing accents sent teachers of French laboring to imbue English-speakers with proper appreciation for la belle langue into harried conniptions of frustration! English-speakers often overlook the niceties of other languages' spellings and forms, as other language-speakers wonder why English spelling is so woefully inconsistent.

I can appreciate that Senarmont might have spelled his name variously for different reasons and at different times - his emperor offering a famous example of that, and Davout a less well remembered, but equally awkward one. But so far, Tony's offered the only primary example, so I'll ride with that until further evidence emerges!
