It is even worse than that. We are told that Gribeauval gave the French the best artillery arm in Europe. This is demonstrably incorrect. In 1805 more than a third of the Grand Army's guns comprised foreign materiel and in 1807 more than half was foreign. If the French artillery was the battle-dominating arm by 1807 we are also told it was, and that is a different argument, it is clear that any qualities are not exclusively attributable to Gribeauval pieces. We should be giving equal, if not greater, credit to the contribution foreign pieces made to the French artillery at this period. This, of course, does not 'fit the script'.
