Help needed on French deployment at Madia 1806

In the late David Chandlers book On the Napoleonic Wars he mentions that the French actually deployed in line in this battle. Yet in glancing through a few modern books on Napoleonic battles they still seem to imply that the French used the coloum. Who is right and if the French did use the line what type was it and how effective was there firepower against the British.
And finally does anyone know of any specific books on this actual battle and campaign only???
Thanks for any help.
