Looks like I will have to read Hopkin's book. My "to read" list never gets shorter, just longer!
I sometime wonder why these "controversies" get so heated. Oman originally said the French attacked in column. He was wrong & later revised his description, perhaps grudgingly as no one likes to be wrong. More recent work has shown that Oman probably did not fully understand why the British line was generally successful. It was more than just firepower, where you positioned & how you used it were the key factors. No doubt this will get revised in tme.
