"the usual translation of the title of this corps elsewhere in Napoleonic literature has been Marines"
Is it a reason to continue the mistake ?
They were definitevly "marins" - taken out of ships because they were no more needed (et pour cause !!!!) for tasks sometimes far away from what they were (or not) trained.
The problem with the "french title" is that, in english, it has a complete different meaning - which is somehow the modern "fusilier marins" that we still have in our Navy.
And Baste is defined by his Navy grades (finally "contre-amiral")
They were and proud to be "marins".
Maybe the english title would have be better with still the word "marins", in bracket.
