As something akin to this in the French army regarding artillery officers, there was a minor stink in the Guard artillery about officers who had risen through the ranks and had not been formally trained at an artillery school. They learned the profession the hard way. Some of those artillery officers that were school trained complained that the others did not rate to be in the Guard. The issue went all the way up to Napoleon for a decision. He decided in favor of the non-school-trained officers in the Guard and they remained in their present grade and billet.
