The fighting at Bergen op Zoom, 19 September 1799, included action at Lange Dyke where Colonel Spencer's 40th Foot were engaged.
According to the Duke of York's despatch of 20 September 1799:
"The column under Lieutenant General Sir James Pulteney...carried by Storm the principal post of Ouds Carspel at the head of the Lange Dyke; upon which Occasion the 40th Regiment,...highly distinguishing themselves."
1/40th Foot: 17 killed, 55 wounded, 13 missing.
2/40th Foot: 10 killed, 47 wounded, 11 missing.
