I feel that we all agree that MacDonald used a formation that was called a Colonne Vuide for the assault of his great body of troops. With that said, I could end this thread. But what I would like to do is attempt to determine the disposition of each regiment within the Colonne Vuide.
Does anyone have the following documentation?
Broussier’s divisional report of 7 July 1809 (I am hoping that since John stated, “These are absolutely invaluable” that he has a copy)
Journal MacDonald’s report 7 July 1809
Armée Française: 1er Régiment d'Infanterie, 1889
John mentioned that the 92e was reunited on the 10 of July, -during the same time that Lamarque also detached six battalions.
Nevertheless in the Memoires de Massena Volume VI, page 415, it mentions that the 9e and one battalion of the 84e were deployed, and the other two battalions and 92e were in colonne.
Now the 1er Division can lead with the left or right, thus the numerical sequence will change accordingly, and I can live with the 9e deployed as long as the entire 92e was united, otherwise the numbers do not add up.
I can even live with the fact that Colonel Penne was wrong when he states that they were formed to the right of the 92e which was deployed.
I must then presuppose we must leave if up to Broussier’s divisional report made on the 7th of July.
As for Lamarque, I finally found someone who actually talked to him on the subject. But I feel that it is I, who shall be needing a semi frizante - served cool in the summer. And as Hans – Karl so elegantly put it “schwere Kost”...
But first we have to deal with Broussier.
