Son of Lieutenant General John Nicholas Skerrett.

Ensign 99th Foot* 1783, Lieutenant 79th Foot*? 1784, Half-pay, Lieutenant 19th Foot 1791, Lieutenant 48th Foot 1792, Captain 123rd Foot+ 1795, Captain 69th Foot 1795, Major 83rd Foot 1798, Lieutenant-Colonel 83rd Foot 1800, Half-pay 1803, Lieutenant Colonel 10th Battalion of Reserve^ 1803, Lieutenant Colonel 47th Foot 1804, Brevet Colonel 1810, Major General 1813.

*disbanded 1784. + disbanded 1796. ^renamed 10th Garrison Battalion 1804 and disbanded 1805.

Peninsular War: With regiment at Cadiz 1809 and on Staff Cadiz August 1811 - 1812. Commanded British Force at defence of Tarifa 1811-1812 and at capture of Seville 1812. Commanded a brigade with Hillís Corps 1812. Commanded brigade 4th Division October 1812-July 1813. Commanded brigade Light Division July-September 1813.

Other Service: Commanded brigade The Netherlands 1813-1814. Died of wounds at assault on Bergen-op-Zoom 1814.
