"The Public Administration of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy" (Harvard, 1938) (revised ca. 1971) by Carroll Quigley:
"This is Quigley's Harvard Doctoral dissertation from 1938, revised for publication in 1971 just a few years before his death. Close to 500 pages, a massive work. This is a copy, not the original and in what seem to be his hand, written corrections and notes show throughout. He said it was never published because the "over-specialized" experts who read it persisted in rejecting aspects of the book. The only man who read it and had the slightest idea what it was about was Gaetano Salvemini, the great historian from the University of Florence, according to Carroll Quigley."
