General who?

I am reading an account of the Prussian Ulans, who went with the main body of the Grande Armee to Moscow in 1812. They went through Wilna early in the campaign and witnessed N bawling out their divisional commander, a general `Wathier`, in front of all and sundry. That general was apparently replaced as divisional commander by Sebastiani a few days later.
Wathier does not exist; there is a Wathiez and a Watier, but from Six, it is impossible to tell which one it is meant to be. Anyone any idea who it was and why he was in such bad odour?
