I believe that you can find authors in different historical periods who have done just that, and it is not restricted to the War of 1812. Dwyer's, Schom's, and Barnett's 'biographies' are excellent examples of what you're describing.

As a learned and excellent historian of the Napoleonic period once wrote, of the quarter of a million works on the period, half of them are a waste of good paper and printer's ink.
