If you read Caulaincourt, the marshals who forced the abdication wanted a regency for Napoleon II with Marie-Louise as regent. Marmont's treason ruined that desire with his treason. And Caulaincourt was also for the regency. Marmont's betrayal of his troops to the allies without their knowledge and to their rage when they found out, was in concert with Talleyrand's wishes and political manipulations-he wanted the Bourbons back and he worked for that which was not to France's benefit.
The idea that Marmont and his subordinates who were involved in the conspiracy did it for France's benefit is ludicrous.
