It seems that Napoleon would have been wiser to appeal to the republicans (whose support he needed) with more talk of rights and freedoms and less of armies and glory.

One interesting point in those Censeur articles is that the writer puts forward the idea of a hereditary Chambre des Pairs as being a liberal idea - to make them more independant. I had previously wondered how Napoleon got away with making his Chambre hereditary, it never occurred to me as a liberal notion, particularly since the Bourbons kept the hereditary system in 1815 but it was ended under the July Monarchy.
