We have been unable to identify the ancestors in France of our South African head of the Marchand family:
Bernard Pierre Jacques Marchand.
He was born ± 1793, came from Bayonne, Bordeaux France and he was 25 years of age when in 1818 he married Johanna Dederika Redelinghuys at Stellenbosch, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa.
As to his lineage:
He may have been a younger brother of Napoleon’s general Jean Gabriel Marchand. He fought at Waterloo and left for Australia after Napoleon’s defeat. His ship was wrecked in 1815 near Saldanha Bay on the Cape West Coast and he proceeded to Cape Town, where he remained settled, becoming the father of our Marchand family in South Africa.
Is it possible to recover the names of the general and his siblings, to decide the matter of the French ancestry of our Bernard Pierre Jacques Marchand?
Thank you for considering this request on behalf of the family.
