Extract from Marshal Macdonald's letter to his daughter (gaps are words I haven't deciphered yet.)

"Je suppose que tu as une bonne carte geographique et que te en auras fait passer un exemplaire a ta soeur, celles que nous avons font detestables, inexactes, ------, surtout pour les positions de lieux, les distances et directions nous sommes gates par celles du ----------- de Prusse qui sont parfaites, sous tous les rapports et meilleures que celles de la France pour ------- dans cette situation nous sommes contraint de mettre les gens a la torture* pour avoir les renseignments qui doivent supplier aux cartes et le malheur veut qu'ils ne soient jamais d'accord entre'eux."

"I suppose that you have a good geographical map and that you have passed a copy to your sister, those that we have are detestable, inexact---- above all for the positions of places, distances and directions, we have been spoiled by those of ----Prussia which are perfect in all ways and better than those of France for---- in this situation we are forced to put people to torture* to get the information to supplement the maps and the misfortune is that there is never agreement between them."

* Probably just hyperbole - at least I hope so!
