I disagree - all firing tests agree that a smoothbore musket has a range of about 1000 paces and more, those examples supplied are the observations of contemporary officers who usually have more experience than ourselves to judge the effect of enemy fire.
One shouldn't confuse fire by skirmishers and that by rank and file though. Infantry firing on long range in an arc - must know something about hitting targets, judging distances etc. - either by experience or training.
