Searched and found nothing on this forum on this topic. The inventor Franz Leppich and his 1812 attack balloon intended to be completed just in time to drop fire bombs on the approaching Grande Armee of Napoleon. This little story of early aviation is actually in War and Peace (which I read but never noticed or recalled this part) But here's a 1942 article (pretty nice timing) that is a wonderful read and tells the whole story from Napoleon kicking Leppich out of France and then Alexander financing his dreams of conquest from the sky.
