Napoleon didn't command during the Wars of the French Revolution until 1796 and that was in a secondary theater. The Rhine generals did well on their own and Moreau commanded in Germany in 1800, not Napoleon. Suchet did very well in Eastern Spain on his own and it took Wellington six years to finally come out on top in the Peninsula. And he had major problems with failed sieges and strategic withdrawals until 1813. It wasn't all success from the beginning.
