My knowledge of Waterloo is fairly superficial and I take what you say about the importance of what people actually knew at the time. What might Napoleon have been intending to do with his left wing if Ney had not turned up in time? As I recollect the summons he was sent was pretty vague "Tell marshal Ney that if he wants to be present at the battle...." which is a long way short of an official appointment to a command: Ney might not have hurried if he responded at all.
