Fouche is a good example of carefully planned treachery: he gained control of the Provisional Government and convinced Wellington that he was the only man who could deliver the government to the King and the short-term result was a restoration to royal favour. What he didn't anticipate was the ruthlessness of the Chambre introuvable which shafted him with its anti-regicide legislation and of the king who declined to protect him. Up till then his plans had worked out well.
If Soult had been planning treachery he should have had some similar strategy lined up or it was a waste of effort.
