2nd U.S. Artillery Fighting as Light Infantry

On Page 164 of his book 'The United States Army in the War of 1812", John Fredriksen states that several companies of the regiment fought as Light Infantry when the Americans attacked Fort George, May 27th, 1813 and later at the Battle of tony Creek, Ontario, June 6th, 1813 they again served in the light infantry capacity. Where did they get light infantry training? In the same book there are several mentions of elements of American regular infantry fighting as light infantry, the 12th U.S. Infantry for example.
