Nelson's Pillar - quite like the column in London - was substantial. The Wellington Monument is a large obelisk-shaped construction (to me a true obelisk has to be a single piece of stone) somewhat larger than Nelson's Pillar. However, as it is in a park, not in a very prominent city-centre location surrounded by buildings like Nelson, a larger quantity of explosives could have been used without fear of collateral damage.
