That's what I say: loot was legal and public in RN.

No french general could take contribution and officially claim to keep 1/5 to 1/3 for himself. Army and Navy tradition were quite different here.

(Ok, I am trolling: neither french nor english army could grant legally part of contribution to officers, while both english and french navy could take prise money, with a much more advantageous system in the RN.)
