Margaret, Thank you. The execution of prisoners who had surrendered and whose surrender had been accepted is not the issue. And this is not a matter of imposing 21st century sensibilities into the context of atrocities that occurred in the late 18th century. This was not a campaign to protect and defend the territories of France, neither was it to maintain regions captured and occupied by revolutionary armies as buffers against belligerent European monarchies. It was, of course, a pre-emptive strike against Britain. All well and good. And I, for one, would not argue against such an objective. However, as I have set out above, the two historians that have most recently reported these atrocities, correctly in my view positing them in the context of the horrors involved in the French campaign in Egypt, have hi-lighted the irony and ambiguity of a French army purportedly acting in the best interests of the indigenous Egyptian population whilst indiscriminately murdering (and that is not too strong a term) men, women and children irrespective of age, race, religion and status (armed or civilian).
