It never ceases to amaze me that the use of Bourrienne's alleged memoirs as a source for the period continues regardless of them being clearly demonstrated as (1) inaccurate, and (2) ghost-written. And the fact that Bourrienne later went nuts and ended up in an insane asylum is a very uncomfortable piece of information, usually ignored.

Of course, the use of unreliable memoirs takes place even in excellent books on the period. The memoirs of Talleyrand, Clare de Remusat, Laure Pernon, Marshal Marmont and others who either had an axe to grind, were attempting to cover up their own 'mistakes' or who were currying favor with the Bourbons are clearly unreliable and shouldn't be used as reference material.
